8 Biggest New Games Of February 2020
Anime, zombies, and some games that might not be that new.

One month down, 11 to go, though if January is anything to go by, the rest of 2020 is looking like it’ll be a real rollercoaster, so to speak. I don’t mean in terms of gaming, mind you. Considering everything that’s been going on in the world over the past month, I have to wonder if I’ll even be able to deliver the biggest games of March 2020 article in a month’s time.
But anyway, back to gaming. January might have been a quiet month for releases, with only Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot and Journey to the Savage Planet to tide us over, but it looks like the releases are set to ramp up heading into February. Let’s take a look at all the biggest gaming releases of February 2020.
ZOMBIE ARMY 4: DEAD WAR – FEBRUARY 4TH

Those darned Nazis are at it again; congregating in massive hordes, stinking of rotten flesh, trying to eat everyone’s brains. That’s what they do, right? Or am I thinking of zombies? Either way, they’re both a bunch of bastards and you get to slaughter them all indiscriminately in Zombie Army 4: Dead War, which sounds like a rollicking good time to me.
Zombie Army 4 is a four player co-op shooter that sees a team of survivors attempt to put a stop to a resurging zombie Hitler, which is like the worst version of Hitler (the best being Taika Watiti). As a team, you’ll take on hordes of zombies, fight new special infected and utilise new weapons and abilities to gain victory.
GRANBLUE FANTASY VERSUS – FEBRUARY 6TH (JAPAN)

Arc System Works have been on top of their game when it comes to fighting games, so it makes sense that we’d see them adapt another property into a good old scrapper, though you might not have heard of Granblue Fantasy. In fact, it’s a highly successful, free-to-play RPG that’s available on web browsers and mobile.
Granblue Fantasy Versus, as you might have guessed, is a fighting game that utilises characters, weapons and skills from the RPG in a 2.5D brawler. The game introduces Skybound Arts, which are powerful special moves that are activated via a single button press, but have a short cooldown between uses, allowing new players to get to grips with the game’s mechanics. Shame it’s only launching on February 6th in Japan, but the West should see it soon enough.
STREET FIGHTER V: CHAMPION EDITION – FEBRUARY 14TH

Street Fighter V and its update, Arcade Edition, has been available for a while now on PC and PS4, but Capcom have decided to update the formula once again by releasing Street Fighter V: Champion Edition, which collects almost all previously released DLC into one affordable package.
Champion Edition includes 40 characters, 30 stages and well over 200 costumes, all for under £25, or $30 if you live on the other side of the Atlantic. While it might not be a new release in the same vein of other games on this list, Champion Edition might just be the game to entice people to either play Street Fighter V for the first time, or bring veteran players back for another round.
DREAMS – FEBRUARY 14TH

If you dream about it, they will come. That’s pretty much the premise for Dreams, Media Molecule’s latest creation extravaganza. Like Little Big Planet, Dreams asks its players to create whatever they can come up with, though Dreams isn’t shackled by the constraints of a 2D platformer. Instead, players can create anything they feel like.
Dreams has been available in early access for a few months now, with players creating anything from legally dubious recreations of famous games to a really appetising full English breakfast. The world is truly your oyster when it comes to Dreams, but if you’d prefer that world to be a text adventure involving a magic unicorn, you can do that too.
DARKSIDERS: GENESIS – FEBRUARY 14TH

Okay, so February might have a few game releases that have already been available elsewhere, and Darksiders: Genesis is another such game. Genesis, the top-down action-RPG spin-off of the Darksiders series, has been available on PC since last year, but soon it’ll be available on consoles too.
In Genesis, you control Strife, the fourth and final Horseman to be playable in the Darksiders series, as well as War, as they venture into the bowels of Hell to take down the various beasts that threaten the world. While you can switch between both characters on the fly, you can also play the game in co-op to take on all comers with a friend.
BAYONETTA & VANQUISH 10TH ANNIVERSARY BUNDLE – FEBRUARY 18TH

Look, February has a lot of old-new releases, if that makes sense, but this one right here is totally worth mentioning. Two of Platinum’s best ever games, Bayonetta and Vanquish, will be getting 10th Anniversary remasters on PS4 and Xbox One, allowing players to relive or experience for the first time some incredible character action.
Both games will be available in 4K, with 60fps on the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro, meaning they’ll look and feel better than they ever have. While Bayonetta has been more widely available in recent times, with recent Wii U and Switch ports, the opportunity to revisit Vanquish is a tantalising one, largely because that game didn’t quite receive the amount of love it should have on release.
DEVIL MAY CRY 3: SPECIAL EDITION (SWITCH) – FEBRUARY 20TH

Another already released game launching in February, Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition is the conclusion of the HD Remastered Trilogy that’s slowly been making its way to the Nintendo Switch over the past few months. While the more recent DMC 5 might be the pinnacle of the series for some, others would argue that Devil May Cry 3 is the best the series has ever been.
A prequel to the overall series, Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition chronicles the rivalry between Dante and his brother Virgil, becoming one of the most iconic aspects of the series’ lore as a whole. Special Edition even allowed players to spend some time as Vergil, the cooler of the two Sparda brothers. Yeah, I said it. The Switch port will even include in-game style switching, similarly to how Dante operates in Devil May Cry 4 and 5, hopefully making DMC 3 feel more modern by comparison.
ONE PUNCH MAN: A HERO NOBODY KNOWS – FEBRUARY 28TH

You might think that One Punch Man is a weird basis for a fighting game, considering Saitama’s immeasurable strength makes him a bit overpowered when compared to his peers. Still, Bandai Namco have decided to take on this herculean task with A Hero Nobody Knows, and the results actually look promising.
A Hero Nobody Knows includes an original storyline where you control your own character, interacting with the series regulars, which should appeal to fans of the series. Meanwhile, the game attempts to balance Saitama with the Hero Arrival System. Picking the One Punch Man himself means he’ll arrive late to a battle, meaning your team will have to survive until he gets there.

Pokémon Sword and Shield ban shows the divide between competitive scenes
Broken? Or balanced? Depends on what game you’re playing
DynamaxingDynamaxing, Pokémon Sword & Shield’s new signature mechanic, has been banned for ruining the competitive integrity of the game by one of its most hardcore competitive communities. And yet, that very same mechanic is getting praise by a different segment of the competitive scene that sees the monster-embiggening move as a balanced addition to the game. Competitive Pokémon mostly exists in two worlds, each with its own values and customs.
Smogon, the group that banned Dynamaxing, is the largest, unofficial hub for competitive Pokémon singles competition. The community has been around since 2004, and has built up their own set of unique rules that are meant to group Pokémon together by their relative strength. This allows players to use their favorites in an environment where they can still shine, usually while using the online simulator, Pokémon Showdown. While Smogon does have some rule sets that differ from typical, six-on-six single battles, most matches look like the one-on-one skirmishes found throughout the games.
Then there’s the “official” competitive community, which competes in tournaments hosted by The Pokémon Company. Known as the Video Game Championship (VGC), these competitions always incorporate whatever new mechanics and monsters are introduced in the latest games, which means that Dynamaxing is an expected mechanic. Unlike Smogon, however, VGC has trainers battle with two monsters on the field — which means two moves per turn.
Before digging in much deeper, it’s important to understand how Dynamaxing itself works. Essentially, trainers can supercharge any one of their Pokémon for three turns during any turn of a battle. This doubles their health, gives them access to super strong attacks that come with additional effects, and makes them giant enough to tower over a stadium of cheering fans.
In some ways, Dynamaxing combines and tones down the signature mechanics from the last two Pokémon games: the transformation aspect of Mega Evolution and the damage dealing, single use Z-moves. Yet, while some competitive Pokémon players disliked these previous mechanics for various reasons, no one ever moved to ban them for ruining the competitive integrity of the game.
So what makes Dynamaxing overpowered enough to ban in single battles while simultaneously improving double battles? The answer comes down to unpredictability, and the number of potential options a player has to deal with when it comes to Dynamaxed Pokémon, according to YouTuber Joey “PokeaimMD.” Joey primarily creates competitive Pokémon singles content battling with Smogon’s ruleset, and he said it’s too hard to stop a Dynamaxed Pokémon from snowballing its way to victory when trainers only get one move per turn rather than two.
Using Gyarados as an example, players can Dynamax the water dragon to double the Pokémon’s HP, giving it access to the move Max Airstream. Using this attack does a huge amount of damage and raises the user’s speed, increasing its chances to attack first on subsequent turns. Then, if the attack knocks out the opponent, Gyarados can boost its Attack stat with the Moxie ability. For comparison, the move Dragon Dance also boosts the user’s Attack and Speed stats, but it doesn’t do damage like Max Airstream does.
Additionally, players can then use Max Geyser on the next turn to boost the damage of Water type attacks. Whatever monster is on the other end of this likely has a small chance of surviving the onslaught, much less being able to counterattack. But if retaliation happens, the potential effectiveness is nearly nullified in advance. Gyarados’ boosted HP in this example means that the Pokémon can survive Electric-type attacks despite typically being weak to them.
With only one attack per turn in Smogon’s ruleset, it can be difficult for an enemy to keep up without also Dynamaxing in return. The problem with Dynamaxing second, however, is that the trainer’s Pokémon won’t have the same stat boosts as their opponent. The only other option is to stall out the three turns of your opponent’s Dynamax and accept that it will knock out half of your team. Then, once the Dynamax ends and the Gyarados (in this case) loses its extra health, it’s much easier to knock out with a super effective Electric or Rock type attack.
“I think had it been the three turns of the lesser z-moves and not the double HP, [Dynamaxing] would have been easier to deal with,” Joey said.

Things can work out much differently in official competitions, where players are allowed to have two monsters on the field at once. An additional Pokémon gives players room to maneuver around Dynamax — for instance, one of the combatants can use the move Protect to minimize Gyarados’ target in the previous example.
Aaron “Cybertron” Zheng, a VGC player for esports organization Panda Global, notes that Dynamaxing brings upsides to double battles in addition to mitigating the mechanic’s downsides.
“Obviously, you can use it for the sole power of offense and getting just really powerful attacks off, but you can also use the defensively to obviously increase your own health,” Zheng said. “I think that’s really cool because it basically makes so many more Pokémon viable … the added effects from the moves are really cool too, and you can use them to boost your partner. I think there’s so many different ways that you can play with it.”
While many VGC players choose to Dynamax naturally strong Pokémon, like Excadrill or Dragapult, others are going with previously unheard options, like Rhyperior. According to Zheng, players will likely figure out more and more previously-underutilized Pokémon that are worth Dynamaxing as the season continues. While players have found ways to exploit Dynamaxing by using items like Weakness Policy to deal even more damage, Zheng said it’s an overall good mechanic for VGC.
At the same time, Zheng said he understands why players from the competitive singles community, like Joey, feel the way they do.
“I think at the end of the day, it’d be really hard to balance this mechanic for both singles and doubles, so I think it was really tailored toward doubles play,” Zheng said. “It’s unfortunate, but I think [the ban] seems like it’s good for the competitive health.”
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/19659129/Screen_Shot_2020_01_30_at_2.11.00_PM.png)
So why do Smogon players prefer to stick to singles, when the developers of the game seem to balance the game around doubles? According to Joey, this decision stems from the desire to play competitively the same way players experience most of the game, with a party of six Pokémon in one vs. one battles.
“A lot of us love that, and I believe the founder of Smogon did too,” Joey said. “That’s why it became as big as it is now.”
Joey did acknowledge, however, that there are active places on Smogon’s forums for those that play VGC and other double battle formats.
“I’M NOT GOING TO LOSE TO MY OPPONENT GOING SUPER SAIYAN FOR THREE TURNS”
Regardless, now that Dynamaxing is gone over at Smogon, he said the competitive singles gameplay is in a really good place. In many ways, Joey said it feels like playing during the Pokémon Black & White days, before Game Freak started adding new battle mechanics, such as Mega Evolution, which drastically affected Pokémon games.
“One of the reasons I like this metagame is because now it really comes down to skill,” Joey said. “There’s no random factors beside any crits or hax there may be. Now it’s based on how well I play, how well my opponent plays, how good my team is, and I’m not going to lose to my opponent going Super Saiyan for three turns.”
There are times when Joey said he misses Dynamaxing, though, so he does play outside of Smogon from time to time. Sometimes that means VGC and other times he’ll play on the in-game competitive singles ladder, Battle Spot Singles.
That ability to play the game in so many ways, Joey added, is part of what makes competitive Pokémon so great. While it may have been controversial to ban Dynamaxing on Smogon, no one is forced to restrict themselves.
“Just because Dynamax is banned in my metagame doesn’t mean you have to follow it,” Joey said. “I know a lot of people say, ‘man, I hate Smogon,’ but you can do whatever you want. You don’t have to play. You can play battle spot singles, or VGC. The beautiful thing about Pokémon is there are so many ways to actually enjoy it.”

This Week in Call of Duty® – January 27
All the intel on this week’s happenings in Call of Duty
The Lead: Modern Warfare®
This week engage in a customized Gunfight, a hybrid of two fan-favorite game modes, and more chaos on Shipment.
The 2v2 tension-filled battle is changing its tune when it comes to loadouts. Instead of being given a loadout at spawn, players can choose the armaments that they bring into this firefight. Consider how a stage might fare better with certain weapon types, then craft your best loadout and head into battle.
Deathmatch Domination combines TDM and Domination into an epic mashup that rewards players for getting kills and playing the objective. Capture the flags and take down enemies in your path and both will push your team to victory on the scoreboard. Focus on staying alive while holding objective areas to maximize your team’s chances of getting the win.

All Shipment. All the time. The chaotic, fun Shipment 24/7 playlist returns. Load into this tight battleground and rack up kills and XP while playing through a host of game modes.
Celebrate with the ‘Lunar New Year’ bundle. This bundle features items festively themed to mark the first new moon of the lunar calendar. Packed with charms, emblems, a calling card, two tier skips, and more get the ‘Lunar New Year’ bundle in the Featured section of the Modern Warfare Store.

Want to pick up some extra Tiers in Modern Warfare? A Tier sale will go live on January 31 at 10AM PT to February 3 at 10 AM PT. Get individual Tiers in Modern Warfare for 100CP and check the Just For You section of the Store to get Tier bundles on sale.

Call of Duty®: Mobile
The Lunar New Year event in Season Three of Call of Duty: Mobile continues this week’s offering challenges, rewards, and new items festively themed for the occasion. Get all the details on the event here.
In Multiplayer, Sticks & Stones kicks off today until Feb 1 at 4 PM PT. With a limited loadout that only has one-hit-kill weapons, make sure your aim is true. Earn points by getting kills and try not to be taken out by a Combat Axe or your points will be ‘bankrupted’. The player with the most points at the time limit wins.
In addition to Sticks & Stones, One Shot, One Kill is still live in Multiplayer. Battle in this Free-For-All game mode and be the first to get twenty kills to claim victory. One Shot, One Kill is live until January 29 at 4 PM PT.
