Essential Picks Sale Saves Up to 70% (NA)

If you’ve been frothing at the mouth, chomping at the bit, or some other weird oral metaphor waiting for a new sale on the PS Store, it starts February 19th. The Essential Picks sale gathers a handful of games, drops the price a bit, and lets you play financial whack-a-mole for any titles you’ve been meaning to grab. Are these essential? Let’s dig into the list and see.

As you can tell from the image, The Witcher 3: Complete Edition is included for only $14.99. That’s an essential game with so much content for you to explore. The DLC is also marked down if you want to pick that up for less. Red Dead Redemption 2: Ultimate Edition is $39.99, and it’s another top game of the generation. Finally, I would argue that Batman: Arkham Knight for $9.99 is another essential game that’s fantastic and a good price. These aren’t the only great games, but I have no reservations about recommending them.
From there, the “essential” game definition becomes a bit murkier. There are versions of Ark and Skyforge with different amounts of DLC. Assassin’s Creed Origins and Odyssey and Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint and Wildlands are also up for sale. There are over ten different LEGO games on sale.  Every one of The Jackbox Party Pack games is on sale too. You’ll need to decide if any of these belong on your shortlist.
One other thing to keep in mind is that some of these games have been priced lower in the past, so keep an eye on the final price to see if you need it now or if you can wait. It’s always a risk, but a frugal gamer is a happy gamer.
I’ve put the whole list from the PlayStation Blog on this page, and you can search it by using the field at the top-right if you are looking for something specific. If not, you can scroll through at your leisure. The Essential Sale runs through March 3rd, so you have plenty of time to plan your next purchase.

Gothic Remake Enters Full Production for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X

Back in 2019 THQ Nordic released a playable teaser for a potential remake of the 2001 hit RPG Gothic. After watching players for the last couple of months, and analysing their responses to the user survey, THQ Nordic has announced that a full-on Gothic remake is now in full production for PS5, Xbox Series X and PC, though the publisher is keen to stress that the game will not be releasing this year.
THQ Nordic will open a new development studio in sunny Barcelona, Spain, which will spearhead development on the Gothic remake based on what players liked and what they’d like differently from the playable teaser.
“We are up for the challenge to develop a full Gothic Remake which will stay as faithfully as possible to the original experience and transport the atmospheric world of Gothic into a high-quality look and carefully modernizing certain gameplay mechanics,” says Reinhard Pollice Business and Product Development Director at THQ Nordic.
It’s another case of THQ Nordic bringing back a long-forgotten franchise, and I can’t find a single bad thing to say about that. Fair play to THQ Nordic, and best of luck to those who are tasked with creating this ambitious remake

Desperados 3’s New Trailer is All About the Deadly Doc McCoy

THQ Nordic and developer Mimimi Games have released a brand new trailer today for Desperados 3, and this one is all about the deadly Doc McCoy, a veteran field medic and a ruthless sharpshooter. He’s no ordinary doctor, mind you, as he’s known to inject enemies with some nasty stuff from his special syringe. Not the guy you want administering your flu jab, then.

The trailer is up above and we’ve got a bit of a rundown of who McCoy is down below, courtesy of THQ Nordic.
McCoy spent his younger years studying medicine in England. When he finished his studies, he was looking for an adventure and oh boy, he found one. He set sail to the new world, crossed the Atlantic, and set foot on the American shore. There, he was forcibly recruited to fight in the American Civil War. He fought and worked as a doctor alike, but could not stand the horror and the futility of the war, so he deserted after a year of service and became a gun for hire. Nowadays he’s known in certain circles as someone who gets the job done and doesn’t ask too many questions.
Desperados 3 will release this summer on PS4. You can pre-order your copy from Amazon (UK) and Amazon (NA)

The Survivalists’ Latest Trailer is Monkey Business

Team 17 has released a brand new trailer today for the upcoming sandbox survival game, The Survivalists. The new trailer is all about monkeying around and explaining what the primate companions can actually do in the game, namely, The Mimic System.
‘The Mimic System’ will see players befriend and tame wild monkeys before training them with bananas. As they munch down on their musa, players will have to show their primate cousins the actions to replicate and provide the necessary tools. From there, they’ll gladly help and support survivors in their adventures. Players will be able to harness the power of multiple monkeys to create ‘monkey chains’, setting them up to work together to achieve a greater goal such as creating an axe for another to chop down trees for wood that can be used by others to build bases.

Tame and train monkeys to become:
  • Warriors: Can be equipped with swords, axes, and spears, to support survivors as they defend against orcling raids!
  • Archers: See off orclings and keep wildlife at range with bow and arrow-armed monkeys
  • Craftsmen: Train primates to build weapons, and craft tools and building materials
  • Landscapers: Monkeys can be armed with tools to gather resources, chop down trees, mine rocks, and clear foliage
Players will gather resources and master a deep crafting system with multiple trees; overcome quests delivered by a mysterious stranger or by messages in bottles washed up on the beach; and go on unique adventures across a multitude of biomes and wildernesses either solo or cooperatively with three others through online multiplayer.
The Survivalists is currently in development for PS4, PC and other platforms, and will release later this year.

Element Space is a sci-fi tactical RPG, and the console edition will bring new voice acting as well as a narrative-friendly gameplay mode for those who want to enjoy the story. You’ll assemble a crack team of troops to fight against the interstellar terrorist cell called the Tempest, and your choices throughout the game will have an impact on how the game plays out, as well as the fate of the galaxy. No pressure, then

About Element Space
In 2199, the terrorist group Tempest unleashed a series of coordinated strikes across the solar system, ending an era of uneasy peace for humanity in its newfound home among the stars. Framed for the attack, Captain Christopher Pietham and his elite squad of troopers set out on a journey across the galaxy to clear their names and save humanity from a genocidal conspiracy.
Maneuver soldiers in strategic turn-based combat peppered with intense action sequences across 24 battlefields teeming with destructible cover and environmental hazards. Form a team, recruiting companions with distinct abilities, beliefs, and allegiances. Gear them up with an armory of more than 30 weapons. Then gain favor with a variety of factions to unlock new perks and powerful skills to lead the unit and take the fight to Tempest in a myriad of ways.
Make decisions that carry weight on and off the battlefield. Element Space’s ideological system tracks narrative choices and combat actions, impacting how Pietham is viewed by his allies and the world around them. Certain actions will attract recruitable characters to the cause, while others can trigger events and open entirely new branches of the story to explore.
“Element Space may be set far in the future but its emphasis on making difficult decisions and camaraderie among friends resonates with us here and now,” said Javier Entelman, CEO, Sixth Vowel. “We’re delighted to partner with Blowfish Studios to bring the game to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and look forward to sharing it with a new audience on March 24.”
Element Space launches March 24 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One for $24.99 / €22.49 / £19.99 / $29.99 AUD and supports English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, and Simplified Chinese language options. Blowfish Studios will showcase the console versions of Element Space and other upcoming titles Feb. 27 – March 1 at PAX East in Boston at booth #29044.

Sony Cancels PAX EAST 2020 Attendance Due to Coronavirus

Today, in an update on the official PlayStation Blog, Sony announced that it won’t be attending this year’s PAX EAST 2020 game show, citing the ongoing coronavirus as the main concern.
The platform holder had previously detailed the games it was planning on showing to the gaming press and public, including hands-on demos of The Last of Us 2, Marvel’s Iron Man VR, Final Fantasy VII Remake, and much more. The full statement is down below:
“Today, Sony Interactive Entertainment made the decision to cancel its participation at PAX East in Boston this year due to increasing concerns related to COVID-19 (also known as “novel coronavirus”). We felt this was the safest option as the situation is changing daily. We are disappointed to cancel our participation in this event, but the health and safety of our global workforce is our highest concern.”
While it’s obviously a disappointment to those who were looking forward to gettings some hands-on time with games before their release, health and safety are important, and we appreciate the effort Sony is making in doing its part in keeping its employees well. If you are going to PAX EAST 2020, please, please, please at the very least take the most basic of precautions; wash your hands, avoid physical contact with strangers, and cover your mouth if and when you need to cough and/or sneeze.

The Witcher 3 Cross Save Ability Won’t Be Coming To PlayStation 4

Geralt’s guardians on the Nintendo Switch were gifted a generous mechanic today – one which allowed a computer save to be transferred across to the handheld device. That obviously allows them to continue their adventure anywhere they want, thanks to the console’s portability. But unfortunately the same feature won’t be coming to the PlayStation 4.
Now, it’s true that it isn’t portable, sharing a lot more in common with the ‘personal computer’ than Nintendo’s hardware. But the ability to switch formats on the fly would be a nice addition, nonetheless, for those gamers who do own more than one version of The Witcher 3. It shouldn’t be too difficult to implement, either.
Just in case your living in hope that things will change in the future, I must report that the development team themselves have said that that will not be the case. In fact, the whole concept was specifically designed for the Switch – they apparently worked closely with the team at Saber Interactive to make the functionality work. But a spokesperson for CD Projekt RED said “there are no plans” to bring the functionality to “the other versions of The Witcher 3“. So, that’s that.
Looking at it tactically, it isn’t hard to realise that it could be considered a marketing ploy. A tactic to encourage a certain proportion of the audience to “double dip”. And a means of providing the justification for spending the extra money by buying the same game twice. But with the sheer popularity of the Switch, wouldn’t it be great if the PlayStation save could also be transferred across?
I guess the whole reason that’s not possible, never mind the PC save share coming to us, is because of Sony’s reluctance to open their console up to others. We’ve seen it before with Minecraft and the like, but isn’t it about time they realise we’re a multi-console world now, and allowing integration is a valuable functionality for all companies who are involved? Don’t make us choose!

Final Fantasy VII Remake Battle Train Promo Event Cancelled in Japan, Because Coronavirus is a Dick

This won’t be of much good to most, if not all, of our readers, but it’s interesting nonetheless. Over in Japan, Square Enix’s homeland, the publisher has put together a promotional event to build up a bit of hype (like it needs it
) for the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake which is releasing on PS4 this April.
Unfortunately, nobody will be going to the event as Square Enix has cancelled the event. The publisher explained via the official Final Fantasy VII Remake Twitter account that the event would not be going ahead due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.
It’s a bummer, sure, and it’s not the first cancellation and it won’t be the last, but it’s disappointing all the same. Earlier today, Sony announced that it is pulling out of PAX EAST 2020 due to concerns about the coronavirus outbreak. Fingers crossed this horrible illness can be sorted out soon; I’m sick of writing about it here, on a gaming website.
