2007 The Witcher is an intriguing but imperfect artifact from past gaming PCs and that’s probably where it should stay.
I went back to the first video game section of the popular holiday fantasy series recently because, like so many others, I finished the Netflix show, Witch Witcher and wanted to go back to where I started. transform. While I found familiar faces, voices and quirky fantasy monster stories that made Witcher-verse one of my hobbies, I also encountered an unpredictable UI, conversations. Bad characters and a world of hidden beauty.
Growing up with 8-bit games, I wanted to think I had a pretty high threshold for outdated graphics, but The Witcher was one of the games with visual ambitions at the time that made it fall into the valley. Strange valley in the decade since.

There is no other way around it: in this game, Glem has a horse face.
And he is not the only one who looks extremely strange. The struggle to add as much detail and depth as possible with the tools available at the time made some of the characters now look scary. Vesemir looks like a wilted Sean Connery while Triss Merigold looks like an oblong mannequin. Small bespoke animations and flourishing cameras that have helped raise The Witcher 2 and 3 are also missing. The result is awkward and rigid conversations like this:
Unlike the second two games that use in-house graphic tools, CD Projekct Red has developed The Witcher using BioWare called Aurora Engine. The studio talked about the past about how it struggled within the limits of an engine designed for the isometric RPG Neverwinter Nights, and especially in 2020, it showed. The Witcher can be played in zoomed, close up and over isometric view, or a combination of both, and about 10 hours into the game, I’m still not sure who is the least annoying.
Isometric view uses a mouse for everything, making it easier to travel between villages and check your map and inventory. However, it makes you feel excluded from the action, like you are playing a strategy game. On the shoulder makes the control become more awkward because your vision is severely limited, but it looks like the actions of the third person that fans of The Witcher 3 are used to seeing. In the end, it’s easy to switch back and forth depending on whether you’re primarily fighting or completing fetch missions, but that makes it difficult to focus on the characters and the story.
Spike difficulty games and jubilant fights also make it difficult. Thanks to the Gods of saving video games whenever you want to be the age-old default in PC games, because The Witcher is undoubtedly one of the role-playing games that any encounter will be. Can kill you if you are surprised or accidentally bite more than you can chew. It’s very gratifying to try and strike with time-grabbing to break into combo moves and constantly switch between schools of the swordplay wizard game, depending on the type of enemy you’re dealing with, but On a few occasions, a few mistakes have spelled out my downfall.

That can’t be said that in the end there was a lot of fun in CD developer Projekt Red’s first stab in a video game adapted from the book by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. If you love the voice actor Doug Cockle, the version of Glem like I have, the core of that performance is gruff, curt and dry humor that has become strong in the first game. The problematic characters that you are tasked with solving still have a bit of a sudden and rough flare that has helped highlight recent Witcher games. No one is afraid to tell you to get angry in The Witcher if you say something to offend them, and there are no heroes and villains cutting biscuits.
Even so, there are still fillers and games with added boring tasks to destroy mobs of enemies and pick up herbs. Early on, Glem personally navigated the sewers beneath the capital city of Temeriam and it was as boring and tedious as anyone who had ever played the sewer part of an RPG would expect. Anyway, I went through those wet waters, because I still had an insatiable appetite for anything related to the Witcher that I could get. And as a legendary museum that helps explain and build the world of Witcher 2 and 3, it has a lot to offer. The Old Friend of Mine quest alone is worth to any big fan who wants to see Glem party with all his old friends. Everyone else may be better off admiring what The Witcher accomplished from afar, or wait to see if it will be remade.
